Philipp Rittermann
Philipp Scholz Rittermann was born in 1955 in Lima, Perú, and moved to Germany in 1969. In the mid seventies he co-founded Galerie Novum, and taughtphotography in Hannover, emigrating to the United States at the end of 1982.
His photographs are included in more than 100 public, private, and corporatecollections including MoMA, New York, SFMoMA and the Bibliothèque Nationalede France in Paris. A mid-career survey of Rittermann’s work was held at the Museum of Photographic Arts San Diego, and Emperor’s River was presented at MCASD.
Rittermann documents art for artists, collectors and major institutions in SouthernCalifornia and across the nation. He also teaches photography and serves onthe boards of several arts organizations.

Artist's Statement
I photograph to reveal what I can’t see.
To that end I use the camera and other photographic means to lengthen my gaze, straddle day and night, summer and winter, presence and absence. It is an open-ended exploration of seeing, remembering, and imagining.
In this work I take images of a site and project them back onto that same site. Often the projection fits the contours of the landscape almost perfectly. Recently I have been shifting, inverting, and reconfiguring. Documenting the projection from off-axis vantage points introduces shadowsand perspective distortions which further confuse the reading of the images, adding temporal and spatial ambiguities.
Like the experiential filter we apply toeverything we encounter, the projections sometimes act as a veil of the past through which we gaze at the present.
