Bio

Hwang (Bo) Kim

Born in Seoul, Korea, Bo began formal art training at the age of sixteen, a pursuit he continued after immigrating to the United States at twenty. He earned both his BFA and MFA from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Bo’s artistic practice has spanned drawing, assemblage, printmaking, and photography, but ultimately grew into oil painting in a meticulous representational style. His commitment to realism provides a foundation for his conceptual investigations, transforming ordinary subjects into meditations on perception, meaning, and the philosophical resonance of the everyday.

Since 2009, Bo has taught studio art at colleges and universities in Missouri and Illinois, and he currently serves as Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Palomar College in San Diego, California. His professional teaching experience includes both undergraduate and graduate instruction across a broad range of disciplines.

As an exhibiting artist, Bo maintains an active record of shows throughout the Midwest and California. His work has been featured in art centers and galleries across Illinois, Missouri, and Ohio, as well as at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.

Artist's Statement

My work begins with the small discoveries I make in life. (These include) - objects, places, and moments that surround us that often go unnoticed. There’s a subtle pull in their presence, drawing me in and offering quietude in their stillness. My work, perhaps, is an attempt to unveil the quiet mystery of their existence—as if by staring or contemplating it long enough, I might glimpse the secret connection between what is visible and what lies beyond sight.

There may be no mystery for me to solve, but it is within this space of contemplation and imagination that I find myself grounded in the present, endlessly intrigued.
