Artist's Statement

Ben Godward's colorful sculptures project off the wall to ensconce the viewer, Godward aptly refers to these as "projections" releasing energy into space like an explosion. He fabricates purpose built steel molds to cast the transparent resin forms. Often titled after lyrics that aren't words like Roger Plant's intro to Immigrant Song, "Aaaaiehhhh Ahhhh", Each projection of sound is unique, and in some cases iconic, but without a definition outside of itself. Godward refers to them as "a primal bit of
energy or poetry that is hard to define but unmistakable...Breath turned to music.'

Godward's exploration into the relation of energy, movement and space is evident in his contrasting floor sculptures. These wedge sculptures "consolidate and concentrate energy." Says Godward, while his wall sculptures project energy away into the viewer's physical space. "Where the *wedges" are dangerous and fragile the "projections" are open, vulnerable and grand."

Godward's wall sculptures vibrate with the surrounding light and movement of color The edges of the works are an interesting place, often seeming not the "end" of the work but the suggestion of an expansive space. The materials' transference of color and light lends the work to going beyond itself, making it difficult to determine where the work actually exists. The drama created by these colorful reflections and refractions change a space just as they are changed by their surroundings in return. This symbiotic relationship captured in Godward's work continuously presents new possibilities that can be endlessly discovered.

The flower-like quality of the work is not lost on Godward who says "I love flowers, they are these gorgeous visible projections of energy and life into the world but also, they are temporal and only here for a short while. If I can capture some of that delicacy and life in these works that's magic!"
